LARG is a group of ICMIF and AAC/MIS members which purchase their reinsurance as a group. The concept was developed over several years and in April 2004 the group was formed by the following members:
The formation of LARG The group was formed to tackle difficulties in placing reinsurance treaties individually. Individual companies experienced problems due to their low business volumes and subsequent high administration costs for reinsurers. The companies also had a lack of reinsurance experience leading to difficulties in negotiating reinsurance, recording appropriate statistical information and producing accurate and timely reinsurance accounts. The advantages of LARG Individual members benefit from being part of a larger group for various reasons:
In order to promote further development the group is supported by ICMIF which organises a 2-3 day seminar once a year and which includes training and presentations on issues that are relevant and common to the group members. The annual meeting also provides an opportunity for networking between group members, their reinsurers and their broker Willis Re, a company which gives significant support to the group. The 2007 LARG meeting will be hosted by Sociedad De Seguros De Vida Magisterio Nacional (SSVMN) and will take place in San José, Costa Rica, July 18-20, 2007 . The group is also supported by a coordinator who integrates the companies' decisions on matters regarding reinsurance contract negotiations and acts as a spokesperson for the group.
