The AAC/MIS 30th Anniversary and XVII Annual Conference took place from November 11-13, 2009 in São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil. In 2009, AAC/MIS celebrated its 30th anniversary as an inter-American network bringing together the cooperative and mutual insurance movement from the Yukon to Tierra del Fuego. For over three decades, AAC/MIS has bridged geography, language and culture to bring together member companies from across the Americas together to collaborate, conduct business, and to share and learn from each other. The theme of the XVII AAC/MIS Annual Conference focused on 30 Years of Trust Earned: Taking Advantage of the Cooperative/Mutual Model. As the focus of our business, the cooperative and mutual insurance model provides not only an exceptional value proposition for member owners but also unique opportunities and advantages in today’s competitive insurance market. The key to success will be to leverage the strengths and advantages of the cooperative/mutual model to their fullest. This conference focused on four major themes addressing key challenges of modern and competitive insurance today including: governance, leadership, regulation and supervision, and reinsurance.
In response to member feedback, the entire conference format was redesigned to provide more in-depth exploration of key issues, greater networking opportunities through small group work and discussion forums, and interactive electronic voting. IIncluded in the conference was a half day pre-conference leadership development seminar entitled Dimensions of 21 st Century Leadership for Cooperative/Mutual Insurers. In the cooperative/ mutual insurance model, strong board and executive leadership is crucial to business success. This half day seminar focused on helping both board leaders and senior executives understand the unique challenges facing leaders in the 21 st century, such as team building and integration, developing future leaders, motivating to reach goals and overcome challenges, fostering creativity and innovation, and leading in difficult times.
